Writer's Block: Who Pays the Deducitble?

You crash your friend's car because you're driving too fast in bad weather. Everyone's okay, but the car has to go into the shop. Do you pay the deductible?

I'd pay - it was your fault and you were driving...

    "Phantom..." Sequel Thoughts

To give you my opinion of the book "Phantom of Manhattan", I own a lot of Phantom fiction - but I passed this one up when I saw it for sale at a book warehouse for $2. I thought it was extremely poorly written and the plot extremely unbelieveable (even for fiction ;).

I think if ALW really wanted to make some money on a sequal, he should go the reality show/contest route and challenge the phans to write a sequal for him and then have the winner have the *possibility* to be written as his sequal musical.

And frankly, if his latest musicals are any indication of the musicality of this one... heaven help us. "Woman in White", in my opinion, didn't have a single good song...Thank goodness I got it when Tower Records was going out of business. ;)

    Found a Dress!
Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of it and there aren't any pictures of it online. it's from the Mori Lee Blu collection - which doesn't have photos online and the bridal store had a sign saying no photography (I'm assuming so people don't take photos and then copy the dresses).

The dress is gorgeous - it's white with some pink embroidery/crystal and silver baubles. There's a side pull/gather of fabric on the left side and the embroidery travels down the left side for a bit before the fabric sweeps across to the right side with the embroidery continuing on the bottom of the sweep.

This was the second time I'd tried on the dress, and I still hadn't found one I'd liked better - I kept comparing the others to this dress.

    Bridesmaids Found a Dress
So after I found my dress, two of my bridesmaids went looking for a dress at the store where I got mine. They found one they liked, but then we went to David's to see if they found something they liked better.

They ended up liking the dress below best (except we'll have it in tea rose [sort of a dusty rose] so it matches with the pink embroidery on my dress). So they ordered theirs and I called the other two bridesmaids and let them know to go get fitted for theirs!

The side sweep of the dress and the way the fabric gathers on the left is similar to my dress.

    Reception Location Chosen!
    www.comfortinnthepointe.com

It's the closest hotel to Niagara Falls. Although it's not the prettiest place out of the ones I saw, everything else about it is the best. It's the most affordable, the menu includes the most diverse foods and most food overall, there's a seperate room for the cocktail hour and hors d'oeurvres, we'd have what seems to be the entire floor to ourselves (and be the only function going on at the time), and the location is amazing - you can walk to the falls in less than 2 minutes. (Or walk to the casino, walk to Canada, etc.) Plus, the guy in charge of banquets seemed to inspire the most confidence.

A Place for the Reception & Money
My mom sent me a package with all the menus this week. When I multiplied out the number of people and then added in the tax and service charge. Yikes! Between $7-$9k. There wasn't much of a difference between sit down and buffet, even choosing just one entree (giving guests no choice) wouldn't have helped much.

So I called my mom that night saying "Well, how's McDonald's suond?" She asked if I had read her email. Turns out, she sent it as I was looking through all the menus. My parents are going to help us out with some of the wedding expenses, something my fiance and I hadn't planned on. Although they won't be able to give us much, their contribution will double our wedding budget and allow us to actually have a reception (something that was looking almost unlikely after having looked at those menus!).

And then when my fiance and I were at his parents house, his father had said something about needing to pay for a rehearsal dinner - another thing that we hadn't planned on.

So Paul and I are very grateful (and lucky) that our parents will be able to help us out. Now we can afford to have a little more than a cookies and coffee reception after the ceremony.

For other things, we're going to make invitations and programmes ourselves. He's a graphic designer and good with computers. Plus, those are things that most people throw away and if we take our time, we can really do a good job on them. (Although, I did get a catalogue in the mail that did have VERY reasonable prices on invitations, so we'll have to price stock paper and ink for printers and compare.) And I've never been the type of person to like flowers much, so we're not going to bathe the church in flowers. Also, a LOT of the reception places actually provide centerpieces (and my handy aunts can add things to them, if we want). For favours, probably do something with Hershey Kisses, since Paul and I both like chocolate.

    Finding a Dress
My budget for a dress is $1000. I shouldn't have trouble sticking within that, although I have no clue how much alterations will cost.

So where should I look? I have an appointment at David's Bridal when I go home for Thanksgiving - my mom, aunt, MoH and, if she gets the day off, one of my bridesmaids will be going as well. So we can kill two birds with one stone and look at wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses. ;)

I'm also looking online to get ideas. I've found some absolutely gorgeous ones for around $500 or so at bridesave.com, although I'm very leery at buying online because you never know how they'll fit or look on you. But at least it gives me an idea of what's possible when I go looking.

    "It's Fine"
And my fiance has seemed to either really like everything I've said about the wedding, or not really cared. He's said that the only thing he had really thought of was maybe an outdoor wedding. But I don't really want that because then you need to have a plan in place in case of bad weather, and then if it's cold and everything, and that gets very expensive. Plus I don't like the sun too much (I would have to wear sunglasses during the wedding) and my mom gets migraines if she's in the sun too long.

But when I ask him to look through menus, he spends all day making a video game. I'd asked him Tuesday night, the day the menus came in the mail, to take a look and a few other days... but no, today he's making a video game.

When I asked him if he wanted to get married at the church I grew up at, he said "Yeah, that's fine." Grrr. So I had my dad take pictures and email them (Paul's only been there once, so he didn't remember too much what the church looked like). And then what'd he say after seeing the photos? "Yeah, that's fine." Grrr. I asked if he was just saying that or if it really was fine. It really was fine, was the response. Fine. I had my mom put us on the church calendar for October 7, 2006.

    Guest List Updates
So I got my mom and Paul's parents to put in the people they want for the guest list. We're up to about 195. Hmm... Paul's parents didn't really have many at all (turns out they're not really close to any of their extended family.)

Mom had put a few of her cousins I don't think I've ever met. Ok! Easy enough - those people are getting announcements. I'm using theknot.com's guestlist feature - it's great because you can let other people update your list and such. I have an A list and the B list is for people I don't think will come. The A list is now down to about 133 people. I put all "and guest" people on the B list to cut that down a bit.

So it's getting a bit manageable. And with mom and dad offering to help contribute to expenses, I'm not worrying as much as I had before. (Now I know it's not totally out of control!)

    Bridesmaid Dresses
I've told my bridesmaids (well, three of the four, as I the fourth I still haven't asked as I haven't been able to get a hold of yet - I think she's on vacation) that I really don't care what color (as long as it's not orange or yellow) and such for the dress. I don't want something too expensive because I know most, if not all, of them don't have hundreds of dollars to throw around and would also like something they could wear again if they really wanted to.

When I was in my friend's wedding, her mother and grandmother made the dresses, so the total cost was $20 for the material. Unfortunately, I'm not that handy!

    Figuring out the Invites/Reception...
So a reception will be about $30/$40 a person. That's a lot. And who to invite? Do I invite someone just because I was invited to their child's wedding, though I'm not really close to them? I'm such a "I don't want to offend/make people feel bad" type of person...

And what about people at work? Do I invite everyone in my unit? Just a couple people? No one? The wedding's going to be 7 hours away by car, so not many (if any at all) would come, but I don't want them to feel bad... I probably won't end up inviting them, but...

Argh. I guess I'll know more when my fiance finally gets his side of the list together so we have a better idea of how many. Right now, I'm at about 100 with just the list I threw together and I haven't even compared with my mom's list to see who she had on hers and my dad's...

    Told the Siblings
I forgot to say how the siblings handled the news the evening we told the parents.

Paul's sister was on her way to a cruise. So we called her. Once Paul's dad said we were engaged, all we could hear was screaming. (The happy kind, of course!) After she calmed down, she said she'd have a drink for us. ;)

When I called my brother, it turned out he was driving (but had his hands-free thing on!). I asked him if he liked Paul. Ian said yes. Then if he *really* liked Paul. Again, he replied yes. And then if he liked Paul enough to be his brother-in-law. Silence. I had to ask if Ian was ok! He said he was, just in shock, then said he was so happy/congratulations/etc.

Paul's brother finally came home from work and we showed him the ring. Next thing I knew, I was getting hugged. (I think that meant he was ok with the news!)

    Told the Parents
Well, Paul and I told our parents we're engaged. We were at dinner and our parents were getting along great. Paul said we had news and that we were engaged. Both of our moms teared up. His dad kept saying "Oh, we're so happy!" And my dad, although he didn't say much, was beaming and you knew he was pleased. When he and mom got out of the car at the end of the day, he squeezed my shoulder.

Now apparently my mom has been crying a lot lately because I'm growing up and her only daughter is getting married. Ah well... ;)

    I'm Engaged
So yesterday was the hockey game between the Capitals and the Penguins. I drove to the metro to meet up with Paul and Andrea. Well, I got to the metro outside the MCI Centre and Paul was waiting - except he'd found out they wouldn't let his bag inside the place. So I suggested either rolling it up and squishing everything into my purse or going back to his office and dropping off his bag. He chose to do the latter just as Andrea came up to us.

Meanwhile, Andrea and I walked around and found a Burger King for dinner. So I called Paul and after some cell phone problems (voicemail and call waiting), I finally got a hold of him to tell him where we were eating. Andrea and I got our food and ate. Just as we were finishing, Paul walked in. He didn't want to eat anything - he said he wasn't hungry, so we finished up and started walking to the MCI Center because the game was going to start in about half an hour.

Well, we got about a block away and were in front of the MCI Center (at the side) when Paul reached for my hand. It wasn't totally out of the ordinary for him to do so, but it wasn't normal either. It was usually me taking his arm. Well, he reached for my hand and then reached into his pocket with the other hand. And that's when I noticed him taking out a jewellry box.

He said something about how he'd been waiting a while to give me something and got down on one knee. And that's when he asked me to marry me.

I knew he was going to ask me within the week because we wanted to announce our engagement when our parents met next Saturday. But I had no idea he'd already bought the ring and was going to propose that evening. He said he'd planned on proposing later that night after the game, but was afraid security at the door would see the bulge of the ring box in his pocket and would ask him to take it out, thus giving it away. So he decided to ask me then and there.

My car had fouled up his idea to buy the ring last Saturday because he thought I was going to wait for the car to get done. But he didn't realise my car was oging to take so long for the 30K inspection and that I didn't want to wait the 4 hours for it, so there went the time he was going to go buy the ring.

So now I'm wearing a gorgeous ring given to me by my *fiance*... It hasn't really hit me yet because I haven't told my parents yet. I think that's when it will really hit me.
